Joo Cancelo is a true artist with the ball and one of the few players in the world who can play at the highest level in two distinct positions on the football field. His unpolished skill makes him unpredictable whenever he takes the field. The Portuguese international isn’t the finest defensive right-back in the world, but his effort when he has the ball is ridiculous.
Nowadays, Cancelo’s only role for his nation is as a right back. Manchester City’s recruitment of Marc Cucurella in the summer shows that the aforementioned evergreen Walker has moved him to left back.
The 28-year-old can glide infield into Jack Grealish’s space from the left side and ping balls with the outside of his right foot. From the right side of the field, he plays a far more straightforward style, with more forays forward, maintaining a wide base of support, and stretching the defence with the beautiful incision. If Cancelo had had more time at right back, he may have been in the running for first place.
