Journalist Christian Falk claims that Newcastle United has indicated a desire to recruit Leno. They want to add him to their squad in the last days of the current window to fight relegation. It seems that the Premier League club is interested in increasing their alternatives between the sticks. There is uncertainty surrounding the future of Freddie Woodman and the goalkeeping spot.

In the wake of reports that Newcastle United was planning a bid for Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno earlier this week. Falk now claims that the Arsenal goalkeeper himself is interested in joining the club’s ranks. He seeks to redeem himself following a dismal first half of the season.

With the arrival of recruit Aaron Ramsdale, the German goalkeeper has slid further down the pecking order at Arsenal. At the midway point of the season, the goalkeeper has made just three appearances in the Premier League. The majority of his appearances came in cup tournaments and international competitions. And, with the club’s elimination from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, it is possible that the player will not make a single appearance for the duration of the season.

Understandably, Leno’s dissatisfaction with his lack of playing time at Arsenal could see him leave. The goalkeeper is hoping to make amends with a mid-season transfer to Newcastle United.

Will the move go through?

While it is not a priority, the Magpies are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper in January to provide more competition for Martin Dubravka. Even though Newcastle United currently has two excellent backup goalkeepers in the shape of Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow, it seems that neither of them will be retained by the club as manager Eddie Howe tries to rebuild the team during the summer.

To do this, the signing of Leno from Arsenal might aid the club in their search for a quality goalkeeper with extensive experience at the top level of football. The German international has established himself as a reliable shot-stopper. He has made a total of 333 appearances in the Premier League and Bundesliga throughout his career in the two competitions.

As for the former Bayer Leverkusen prodigy, his current deal with the Emirates will expire in less than 18 months. This will ensure that he will not be an expensive acquisition. However, Arsenal has no viable backup to Ramsdale in goal at present.

It is unclear whether Arsenal will offload Leno in the middle of the season or not. As we near the close of the winter transfer window, the club’s rumoured pursuit of American international Matt Turner might have a significant impact on their chances of completing the deal. Many recent reports suggest that the deal is all but done. Let’s wait and watch!!
