In a recent interview, former Arsenal and Chelsea winger Willian has revealed some truths about his time at Arsenal. Willian joined Arsenal in 2020 on a free transfer as he ran out of contract at Stamford Bridge. A lot of questions were raised about his signing as he had previously spent seven long years at arch-rivals, Chelsea. While he had the perfect debut as he assisted thrice against Fulham, his spell at Arsenal is regarded as one of the worst ever. He was signed as an attacking midfielder who could help the team create chances and score as well, but he failed to do either.
Willian’s signing made Arsenal fans furious, and they criticized the player a lot for his poor performances which he put out very frequently, which cost the club a lot. Not only did he have a three-year contract, but he was also among one of the highest-paid players at the club which made the fans even more furious knowing that the club could’ve spent that money somewhere else.
What did Willian say about Arsenal?
After having a disaster of a season, both Arsenal and Willian mutually decided to part ways as his contract got terminated and he joined his boyhood club Corinthians. After leaving Arsenal, the Brazilian has made some shocking comments about his time at the Emirates. In conversation with Arena SBT that he could never ‘adapt’ to playing at the Emirates and that his year at Arsenal was complicated. He further added that he wasn’t happy at the club and that it was his decision to leave the club, Arsenal never wanted him to leave.
While we don’t know the story of both sides, Willian did save Arsenal a lot of money by leaving as a massive wage bill was cleared off the club’s books. Willian also got applauded by the fans for this, but his recent statements have again caused chaos amongst Arsenal fans.
