Twitter Reacts As Real Madrid Mauled Shakhtar Donetsk In A Lopsided Encounter

Benzema and Vinicius Jr were simply amazing as Madrid ran rings around the Russian champions

The Real Madrid fans were absolutely overjoyed as their favourite team ran riot at the NSC Olimpiyskiy in Moscow. Coming on the back of a lackadaisical drubbing at the hands of the dark horses, Sheriff, they were dictating the proceedings ever since the word go.

The Russian outfit was high on confidence before the game started, as the preceding year witnessed them coming up trumps in both the home and the away leg fixtures against Madrid. The clash started on a reticent note for the visitors, as Shakhtar took the fight to Madrid early.

The story of the match between Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk

Despite an attempt from Benzema as early as in the third minute where the French sensation dragged it wide, it took almost half an hour post that avenue for Madrid to fire again. Around the 33rd minute mark, it was Benzema again, pulling at the strings of destruction as his fierce strike sailed over the woodwork.

Four minutes down the line, Real Madrid tasted blood as Shakhtar defender, Kristov dinked the ball into his own net after a lofty attempt by Vasquez at feeding an onrushing Benzema. The opener came against the wind of the game as Madrid until then was feeding off shreds and shards. The goal, however, acted as a catalyst as it galvanized Real into some serious business after the breather.

All it took for Real Madrid to hit their stride in the second half was just six minutes as Vinicius Jr chipped the ball into the net past an advancing Shakhtar custodian from a stellar through that was carved by erstwhile Croatian captain, Luka Modric.

The opening goal was simply the lifting of the floodgates, as there was no looking back for Ancelotti and his wards from there. Within just five minutes of the second goal, Benzema doubled his tally as he pulled off some phenomenal maneuvers to carve some space for himself inside the box as he drilled Benzema’s effort into the back of the net with an excellent left-footer.

If the second goal by Vinicius was simply an ode to his brilliance, the assist for Real Madrid’s fourth was the reason why Ancelotti values the Brazilian striker so much. With a couple of deft touches and some stellar interplay with Benzema, he teed up Rodrygo who bundled the ball into the roof of the net, making the scoreline as emphatic as it can be.

Around the 67th minute, Shakhtar had the opportunity of reducing the arrears but a sublime double save from Courtois kept the cushion intact for Madrid. After an incredible night of football, Karim Benzema finally managed to find his reward as he side-footed Asensio’s cross into the back of the net, completing the rout as Real Madrid avenged their humiliation at the hands of the Russian champions in the preceding year’s UCL in style.

This is what Twitter had to say about the victory of Los Merengues

Twitter couldn’t keep calm as Real managed to turn their fortunes around and that too in the European stages, which has been their forte for the last decade.
