What Does The Future Hold For Chelsea’s ‘Next John Terry’?

Todd Boehly has made some big promises since the takeover and wants to capture big names as soon as possible to make Chelsea Premier League contenders yet again. But with the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andres Christensen, Chelsea’s defence is about to get weakened a lot and with the possible exits of the club captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso, Chelsea will be left with only a handful of options at the back. So, sorting out the defensive issues within the squad has to be a top priority.

According to reports, the club wanted Sevilla’s Jules Kounde as the replacement of Rudiger but their interest in the Frenchman has recently died out since the change of board members. The club manager Thomas Tuchel reportedly prefers Matthijs de Ligt and Boehly now wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge. Even if Chelsea signs him, they will require backups. But as things stand, they may not need to look in the market for that.

Levi Colwill, the 19 years old English centre-back who was on loan at Huddersfield Town last season could get a chance to prove his worth after impressing in the Championship. Another one of Cobham graduates who has been at the club for more than 10 years knows the club through and through and wants to make it into the first team if given the opportunity.

Does Levi Colwill Have A Future At Chelsea?

As things stand, Levi Colwill is part of Thomas Tuchel’s plan but Chelsea may not put a whole lot of faith in the youngster and may rather give him time and chances to develop. They certainly do not want to rush things with him but the interest of the big clubs around him makes things a bit more complicated. Premier League clubs such as Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest want to sign him permanently.

Even though Thomas Tuchel has said that would not make a concrete decision on the future of the young academy graduates unless he gets to watch them in the preseason, the tempting offers now may force the manager and the owners to come to a conclusion earlier than expected. On the other hand, Colwill is hopeful of staying at Chelsea and his comparisons with the club legend John Terry definitely excites him as he once said, “It’s not a bad thing to be called the new John Terry”.

All in all, the question marks are there over his future but Chelsea should not repeat the mistake of selling its talented youngsters sooner than they should as the club has already lost some rough diamonds in the last few windows.
