The youngster had his breakthrough season last year as gaffer Mikel Arteta counted on him after Arsenal massively felt the need for an attacking midfielder and they had no one else except Emile, although they later signed Odegaard on loan in January. Smith-Rowe had previously came on as a substitute, but made his first start of the season against arch-rivals Chelsea as Arsenal registered a 3-1 win against them on Boxing Day.

After having a perfect performance against Chelsea, ESR was then a nailed starter and has been starting on a regular basis for Arsenal since then. He scored four goals and assisted eight times last season, very good for a player who started playing from mid-season.
