According to reports, Manchester City and Real Madrid are interested in signing Chelsea defender Reece James during the next summer transfer window.

Following the imposition of recent fines by the United Kingdom Government on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, the Daily Mail reports that the club might see a significant departure over the summer. In 2019, James earned his first-team debut following a successful loan period with Wigan Athletic. He is a product of the Chelsea youth system. Reece came through the ranks after a successful loan spell with Wigan Athletic. After a short period, he established himself as a regular on the right-hand side of the defence. Thus, demonstrating his versatility by excelling as both a wing-back and a typical full-back.

James has shown excellent attacking talents. He has established himself as one of the Blues’ most important creative outlets moving forward. Particularly in the current system under Thomas Tuchel. Meanwhile, he has shown himself to be a capable and determined opponent. So far, he has made 110 appearances for the team. He has scored nine goals and registered 15 assists in the process. Thus, assisting them in winning the UEFA Champions League last year.

Moreover, James’ swift rise to prominence at Chelsea has not gone unnoticed. Real Madrid and Manchester City are both showing an interest in the 22-year-old. He has 10 international appearances to his name for his country.

For the long term, Real Madrid is on the search for a successor for first-choice right-back Dani Carvajal. Carvajal has been plagued by injury issues over the last couple of years. He has struggled against quick strikers. Los Blancos need to sign a new right-back to replace Lucas Vazquez, who has failed to impress.

What will Reece James decide?

In recent weeks, many names have been mentioned as potential candidates. Chelsea’s Reece James is one of them. Los Blancos, on the other hand, will have to fend off interest from Premier League champions Manchester City. They are also keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old Blues forward.

Currently, the Cityzens have Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo as possibilities for the right-back position. The latter has been utilised heavily on the left side by Pep Guardiola in recent matches. And, with Walker approaching the age of 32 in a few months, Manchester City is considering alternatives for a long-term replacement. Chelsea ace Reece James is emerging as their top prospect.

James’ current Chelsea deal, which he signed in 2020, will keep him at the club until the summer of 2025. It will be intriguing to see whether Real Madrid or Manchester City can entice the England star away from Stamford Bridge at a time when the Blues are going through a difficult period.
