The Scudetto finally returned to the hallowed San Siro after a staggering hiatus of 11 long years as the Rossoneri dealt the coup de grace to school Sassuolo in a lopsided encounter. Call it poetic if you want but the man who shone the brightest on the night was none other than the seasoned veteran, Olivier Giroud, stamping his signature showdowns in the biggest of games, ushering AC Milan to the hallowed grounds.
Even before the clock struck 10 minutes, AC Milan was on the brink of securing the lead as Saelemaekers would whip in a perfectly-weighed cross at a marauding Giroud whose thumping header forced Consigli in producing a fine save. Tomori had another avenue presented at his feet as Hernandez would whip in a picture-perfect corner kick at the far post only for the former to redirect his header at Lopez on the goal-line.
This is what Twitter had to say about AC Milan after their return to the Promised Land
In the stormy exchange of hefty haymakers, it was Giroud who would finally rattle the impasse with a clinical finish as he would spear home a curler beyond Consigli after Leao would snatch the possession from Ayhan midway down the pitch. Leao would then careen forward to square off an advancing Giroud who would make no mistake in drawing first blood for AC Milan.
Within half an hour, Giroud’s brace would put the game to bed as Leao would commit another grand larceny with Ferrari at the receiving end this time. The Portuguese international would then explode into an unchecked run and would finally set up for Giroud who would smash home the second of the night to send Milan surging.
If Giroud’s brace was the killer for Sassuolo, Franck Kessie would seal the game and deliver it to the gateway of the championship as Leao would once again emerge as the engineer of a prized finish and the latter would hit the bull’s eye with distinction.
The second half got pretty cagy with the action boiling down mainly to the midfield. There were hardly any distinctive avenues that both the teams would unlock and at the end of the regulation time, AC Milan was back to the Promised Land, riding high on another promising display. Twitter would explode in sheer ecstasy congratulating the Red and the Black for their herculean efforts to finally put an end to their Serie A trophy drought.
