Florian Wirtz is doing quite the rounds in the ranks of European football of late and all the big clubs of European football are trying to land him in their ranks. What is so special about Wirtz?

The first and foremost thing that one must know about Wirtz is that he is just 18 years old and the numbers that he has been racking up day in day out are overwhelming, to say the least.

He joined Cologne in 2010 at the tender age of seven and ever since then he has worked his way up to the top and has been touted as one of the best midfielders to be coming up in the near offing.

After his phenomenal performance helped Cologne land the U17 Bundesliga in 2019, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Liverpool came knocking. Wirtz was responsible for scoring eight goals in a game that included a screamer from the half-line for Cologne against Wuppertal.

Following his rollicking displays for Cologne, Bayer Leverkusen offered him a decent contract that saw the youngster shuffling his allegiance to BayArena.

Wirtz made his Bundesliga debut against Werder Bremen and in the process became the youngest debutant for Leverkusen at the age of 17 years and 16 days old.

18 days from then, he went on to become the youngest person to have scored a Bundesliga goal a record that was later rattled by Youssoufa Moukoko.

He has already netted 7 goals in the current edition of the Bundesliga where he has been a part of 22 games that has also seen him stitch 10 staggering assists.

Wirtz has also fired 3 goals in the Europa League alongside the three assists that he has stitched together. He has also become the youngest player to get himself a chance in the U21 team of Germany where he bagged an opportunity at the age of 17 years and 159 days. He was also involved in a breezy double out of which the opener came within just 29 seconds of the kick-off.

He is also drawing a lot of comparisons with Julian Brandt where he is a total package, capable of passing, shooting and finishing with equal brilliance.

Germany head coach, Hansi Flick was heard quoting, “Florian is just a huge asset for this team through his carefreeness. He’s simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He’s got a good total package.”

Going by the current interests that the European stalwarts have expressed in him, Leverkusen’s director, Simon Rolfes quoted, “I knew a lot of clubs were interested and then we thought that before he went anywhere else, let’s try to get him to join us and stay at home. I’ve known the player since he was 14.”

Even though only time will say what will he shape up to be but at the moment, he is being quite the apple of the eye for Bayer Leverkusen.
