The incident took shape when several flares close to the pitch went off for a pyrotechnic illustration. Clarity is still being sought upon the fact whether this was a display orchestrated by Ajax or was it something pulled off by the fans as the latter may have serious repercussions.

As soon as the flares went up, an impromptu fire was seen emerging from the bottom of the stand and there was a dense cloud of smoke circulating in an undated dense cloud.

From the initial stages of the investigation, it seemed like one of the flares caught a banner dangling from the stands and it played the catalyst to the flames. The fire was snuffed out eventually but a good deal of smoke consumed the stands, leading to chaos. Even though reports suggest that there have been no injuries whatsoever, the official confirmation is still to arrive.

The story of the match between Ajax and Feyenoord

Despite the initial setback, the game did start at a delayed interval where the former giant-slayers in the European hunt for glory walked out with the bragging rights after a clinical display against Feyenoord.

Luis Sinisterra fired home the opener of De Klassieker as early as in the 8th minute. Ajax’s rising sensation of the ongoing edition of the UCL, Sebastien Haller restored parity with a fine finish in the 24th minute.

However, their joys were short-lived as Guus Till smashed home an impeccable strike to restore the lead for Feyenoord and this left Ajax scrambling around in the dark, desperate for a glimmer of hope. It took them quite a while to find the back of the net as Dusan Tadic bagged the equalizer in the 78th minute blowing back life into the game.

It was in the 86th minute where Antony sealed the fate of the game for Ajax with a fine finish, leading the revolution around for the next eight minutes before he was handed marching orders by the arbitrator.

Despite a win for the hosts, Ajax will not be able to sit comfortably considering the unfortunate development last night that can be an alarming scene for the fans present.
