In a recent interview, the manager of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Christophe Galtier, discussed Lionel Messi’s absence from the team due to injury.
On October 11, the Parisians will host the matchup against Benfica that will take place in the UEFA Champions League.
The most recent match they played against the Portuguese team resulted in a 1-1 tie. After combining with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jr., Lionel Messi was able to score the sole goal for the French club with a fantastic curling attempt.
However, the Argentine was forced to leave the game in the closing stages because he sustained an injury and could not continue playing. The Parisians’ No. 30 player was also unable to be included in the matchday roster for his team’s Ligue 1 match against Stade de Reims on October 9, which ended in a scoreless draw.
Galtier spoke out to the media about Messi’s absence before the forthcoming Champions League matchup, as he remarked (via RMC Sport): “Messi felt discomfort in his calf during the first game against Benfica. He thought he could take part in tomorrow’s game, but in the end, he is limited. He is better but he still has this unpleasant feeling. He preferred to abstain. We will see the evolution but it is very likely that he will be present against Marseille.”
He added: “We know the importance of Leo in our game, his state of form and the connection he can have with the other players. We cannot be happy with his absence. But we will have to find other situations, other connections to bring danger to the Portuguese defence.”
