Living up to the hype and the expectations, Arsenal vs Manchester United certainly proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season. Controversies, drama, goal-fest, iconic celebrations, the game had it all. Continuing their trend of having brilliant starts, Arsenal scored the opener in what turned out to be one of the most controversial decisions of the season so far. Manchester United’s David De Gea was down injured after teammate Fred stepped on the shot stopper’s toe. Arsenal meanwhile continued anyway and went on to score as Emile Smith Rowe thrashed one volley past the net.
After much discussion and reviewing of VAR, the goal stood in Arsenal’s favour. United equalized at the brink of halftime as Bruno Fernandes netted his 100th goal for the Red Devils. The start of the second half belonged to Manchester United as Cristiano Ronaldo tapped one goal in as Old Trafford danced with joy. But the celebrations did not last long as Martin Odegaard instantly replied with an equalizer.
Manchester United were looking dangerous on-the-counter attacks and a silly mistake from Odegaard led them to a penalty, just what they needed to gain a lead over the Gunners. A fierce penalty straight down the ground from Ronaldo gave the Red Devils the lead as the 36-year-old scored his 801st goal.
Poor finishing from the attackers certainly led Arsenal down in this crucial game. A win at Old Trafford could’ve seen the Gunners go 4th in the PL standings, but it just wasn’t meant to be today. This disappointing performance left Arsenal fans shocked on Twitter as at least a draw was expected from this match. Mikel Arteta’s men will now travel away to Goodison Park on Sunday and will be hoping to attain a win there.
