The Bayern Munich striker who is just 33 years old set Barcelona ablaze with his fiery brace last night, continuing where he left off in the preceding season. Robert Lewandowski has been in magical form ever since his arrival at Bayern Munich, and he continues to haunt defences with every passing day.
Going by the words of the football poet, Peter Drury, Emirates is hardly the fortress that it used to be at least decade back and Arsenal is currently battling relegation after three consecutive defeats. A goal from Aubameyang against Norwich City saw them open their Premier League account, but it wasn’t really a convincing showdown from the Gunners.
Despite Arsenal’s vertiginous decline in the preceding decade, it used to command a formidable force at the turn of the century and the man who led the charge for Arsenal was none other than French sensation, Thierry Henry. Going by his menacing displays all over Europe, Henry inspired countless footballers and one of them was Polish marksman, Robert Lewandowski.
In 2019, Lewa confessed, “Growing up my dream was to play in the big stadiums with 80,000 fans, but when I was young in Poland, we didn’t have any top players.”
He had this very simple question growing up that why couldn’t be a Polish player reach the top of the world. He then quoted, “When I was six, I remember Roberto Baggio at the 1994 World Cup. When I was between 10 and 14, Alessandro Del Piero was the best player for me. Then my idol was Thierry Henry. He was amazing – it wasn’t just how he scored the goals, but what he did for the team.”
Henry joined the Gunners in 1999 and eventually became one of the instrumental members of the 2004 Invincibles side and laid the path for Arsenal to be one of the greatest forces of Europe. After eight long years at the Emirates, he decided to switch his allegiances to Barcelona to be a part of Guardiola’s mega side.
Lewandowski has been a part of Bayern Munich since 2014 where he switched from Borussia Dortmund. Ever since his arrival to Bundesliga, he has managed to score 283 goals. Barcelona couldn’t match his supremacy, as they were absolutely outclassed in last night’s UCL encounter. He has scored 41 league goals in the preceding year, and he continues to be one of Europe’s leading scorers.
