Reason Behind Sergio Ramos Being Dropped From Spain Revealed

The world was left stunned when Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, was dropped from the Spanish squad just ahead of their Euro 2020 quest. Despite being one of the most reliable stars in the Spanish and the Madrid side, Ramos didn’t qualify to the likings of Luis Enrique.

It was an inexplicable move to most of the players, as they were not able to figure out what exactly was going on. They racked their brains trying to decipher the axing of a star who has been a part of 180 appearances and is also one of the leading goal-scorers for Spain, despite being a center-back.

As the official team list came out announcing the leaving behind of Ramos, it rekindled memories of another Spanish manager, Luis Aragones leaving out their iconic striker, Raul Gonzalez.

The reason behind Sergio Ramos’ exclusion from the Spanish squad

2020-21 wasn’t particularly a fruitful season for Ramos with the big man undergoing countless injuries that plagued the year for him.

Keeping aside the tottering 21 performances through the season, 2021 saw him be a part of only 5 games. Two of these five matches came in January while the other three came after a hiatus that was caused by surgery to address an issue with the inner meniscus of his left knee. The other two came in March while the last one being the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea.

Luis Enrique quoted, “Ramos has not been able to compete this season, he has not been able to train with the group. I clearly see that it’s a complicated decision. I recommended that he be selfish and that he regains his level to play in his club and in the national team.”

Ramos confessed that he was not really happy with him being dropped from the national calling but embraced the fact with a smile across his lips.

Ramos posted a picture of him on Instagram with a caption that read, “I have fought and worked every day, in body and soul, to be able to reach 100% for Real Madrid and the national team but things don’t always work out the way we’d like.”

He concluded by saying, “I wish all my teammates the very best of luck and I hope we have a great Euros. I’ll be another fan cheering on from home.”
