Mesut Ozil Returning To English Football – Arsenal Linked?

Reports say that Fenerbahce is planning to cancel Mesut Ozil’s contract. This might pave the way for the former Arsenal star to make a return to English football. At the time of his departure from the Emirates Stadium in 2021, the German had a tense relationship with the Turkish giants.

A tough start to his career in the Super Lig. He had no goals in his first 11 appearances in all competitions for the club. But a very promising season in 2021/22 helped him to bounce back from his struggles. In the first half of the season, the now 33-year-old had scored nine goals and provided two assists for the Istanbul giants. He had even led the club on several occasions. But he is no longer in contention to play.

According to football.london, the German playmaker has been banned by Fenerbahce after a dispute with interim coach Ismail Kartal. An official statement from the club read: “Our Football A Team players Mesut Ozil and Ozan Tufan have been expelled from the team as a result of the decision made. It is made known to the public.”

After that, he was left out of the squad for the 4-0 win against Kayserispor. It now seems that he will be released. According to AS, the procedure to cancel his contract – which is slated to expire in 2024 – has already started. Fenerbahce president Ali Koc dismissed the likelihood of his making another appearance in the Turkish league.

“At this time, we do not have a strategy for it. This is not a choice to be taken lightly. The most essential thing is Fenerbahce,” he said.

Next Destination for Mesut Ozil?

While it is unclear where the former Arsenal player will wind up in the future, it looks that a return to English football might be a possibility in the future. In addition to Hull City, who are interested in making a bid for the World Cup winner, David Beckham’s Inter Miami is also said to be interested in signing Ozil if the Turkish club Fenerbahce fails to retain his services.

As you may recall, the German midfielder departed Arsenal a little over a year ago after a public spat with current manager Mikel Arteta. But the Spaniard was respectful of the player as his time at the club came to an end.

“Mesut’s successes at Arsenal are undeniable, according to the manager. It was an honour to have had the opportunity to play beside him and, more recently, coach him. During his stint in the Arsenal jersey, his vision and ingenuity resulted in a number of goals,” he said.

“Over the years, Mesut was instrumental in many memorable events for our team, including our three consecutive FA Cup final victories. These accomplishments will be a part of our collective memory for a long time. We express our gratitude to Mesut and wish him the best of luck at Fenerbahce,” Arteta said.
