Marseille will finalise the permanent acquisition of Matteo Guendouzi, according to Fabrizio Romano, after the French midfielder has excelled during his current loan stay at the club. Arsenal will get a decent payment, which was already agreed upon in the summer of 2021.
Matteo Guendouzi set the tone for Arsenal as a 19-year-old during Unai Emery’s first season in charge as the club’s manager. Despite his fiery temperament, the French midfielder turned in some great performances during his time with the Gunners. He was tipped to become a future star at the Emirates.
Guendouzi’s excellent record continued in his second season, as he just lost out on the Europa League title and finished fourth in his first year. But internal problems at Arsenal led to a disastrous domestic campaign for the club. This culminated in Emery’s dismissal and the appointment of Mikel Arteta as a consequence of the sacking.
Arteta stayed with the same group of players that Emery had faith in, which included Guendouzi. Following a match against Brighton & Hove Albion, Guendouzi was embroiled in a post-match confrontation with his countryman Neal Maupay. The midfielder’s actions did not align with Arteta’s ideology. As a result, he was no longer a member of the Arsenal squad.
The management did not have high expectations for the player, judging him to be at best a troublemaker, which jeopardised his future at Arsenal. A loan spell with Hertha Berlin for the 2020/21 season followed, followed by a loan spell with Marseille for the 2021/22 season.
Marseille’s unwillingness to pay a significant transfer price assured that the player would be sent to them on loan for the remainder of the season. An obligation to purchase provision was also included in the deal. It stated that if certain requirements were satisfied with regard to the player and his performances, the player would be purchased for an estimated €10 million.
After playing 38 times in all competitions this season, Guendouzi has now fulfilled the primary clause, triggering the permanent purchase clause in the process. He is understood to be going to sign a three-year contract with the French giants that would keep him at the club until 2025, therefore ending his time at Arsenal.
Arsenal is already aiming to bolster their midfield positions in the summer transfer window, while simultaneously preparing a new deal for Arteta to begin negotiations. As for Guendouzi, there was some amount of interest from teams in Spain and England before his terms were satisfied at Marseille. But the midfielder seems to have found a home with the French giants.
From a long-term viewpoint, Guendouzi has all of the characteristics necessary to succeed in the Premier League, however, for the time being, it seems like his destiny is at Marseille. According to the current situation, Arsenal might get around €10 million in addition to the modest loan fee they may have levied at the beginning of the season.
