Manchester United are expected to speed up their search for a new permanent manager in the next month. They seem to be following the advice of Cristiano Ronaldo in doing so. Since the resignation of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick has been appointed as his temporary replacement. However, there is no long-term replacement as of now.
In addition to serving as manager for the duration of the season, the German will also serve as a consultant for the club for two years. Rangnick has suggested that he might be open to extending his time in charge of the club, even though they have only picked up 17 points from a possible 24 in the Premier League.
“The folks with whom I have talked have been quite clear that we are talking about a six-month job,” Ragnick stated at the time of his announcement in December.
“What will happen in the summer has never been brought up in conversation. We will see whether they are willing to talk with me about it after that. In the event that everything goes according to plan, I could make the same proposal as I did at RB Leipzig, which is that it will be beneficial to continue working for another year – but this is all hypothetical,” the German tactician stated.
However, football director John Murtough is already looking forward to the future, with the Athletic stating that a four-man shortlist has already been set up for the position of manager. According to the article, the process for appointing a new manager will begin in the coming weeks. Erik ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino, Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique are in the list of managers the Red Devils want.
Having struggled under Solskjaer, United is searching for a coach with vast experience of working at top European teams to replace him. According to a report published last month by Mirror Football, Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag’s name has surged. He was ahead of Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino to become the favourite for the post.
It was Ten Hag’s guidance that helped convert some underachieving players into real Champions League challengers. The team finished their group stage campaign with an unblemished record of 100 percent. However, Mauricio Pochettino, who is presently the manager of Paris Saint-Germain has been another contender for quite some time. Further, Julen Lopetegui, the manager of Sevilla, and Luis Enrique, the manager of Spain, all have a possibility of obtaining the top job.
Ronaldo will be watching events with bated breath, with him being an influential figure. Reports claim of his dissatisfaction, with the way the team was playing under Solskjaer. It has been reported that the 36-year-old’s agent Jorge Mendes did have a chat with the club executives. This happened right after Solskjaer’s last game in command. Mendes was keen on making it obvious that there was a need for change.
Luis Enrique’s name, according to rumours emerged immediately after the Norwegian’s sacking. Ronaldo chose him to be the man to lead the club forward. Enrique is still on United’s four-man shortlist too. It is reasonable to conclude that he would still be his first pick. This is from among the available possibilities at present, though there are more options.
In his time at Real Madrid, Ronaldo faced up against Luis Enrique’s Barcelona team. The side had just won the treble in 2015. They were coming off the back of bringing Spain to the World Cup finals in Qatar. It is a scenario he probably wants to replicate at Old Trafford. The club and players have ambitions and now the owners need to push for it.
