Real Madrid qualified for the Champions League semi-finals. They defeated the current holders of the trophy on aggregate by a score of 5-4 on Tuesday. Los Blancos seemed to be on their way to advancing to the next round after defeating Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of the quarter-finals at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Chelsea, on the other hand, put up a tremendous fight at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night. Thus, forcing Real Madrid to the verge of defeat. After half an hour, the Blues were up 3-0 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate. The La Liga leaders were clinging to life by a thread. As a result, Luka Modric stepped up and performed a great piece of sorcery to set up Rodrygo Goes for his goal.

Because of the goal, the game went into extra time. Karim Benzema scored in the additional 30 minutes to give Real Madrid an aggregate win, even though they were defeated on the night.

With an outstanding performance against Chelsea, Modric received widespread praise across the world for his efforts in a pivotal match for Real Madrid in the Champions League. Nevertheless, it opened the door to speculation about his long-term prospects beyond the current season.

What did Luka Modric say?

Modric’s contract with the Spanish giants expires after the current season when he becomes 37 years old in a few months. In the background, negotiations for a new agreement have been taking place. When asked about the status of his contract, the veteran superstar reiterated that his primary focus at the moment is on finishing the season with the squad.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Modric said, “I take it year by year like I always do. The most important thing right now is that we have advanced to the semi-finals. I give all I have on the field to repay all of the passion that Madridistas have shown me.”

Recent rumours have suggested that the 36-year-old is on the verge of agreeing to a new contract with the Spanish giants. It remains to be seen if this is the case or whether he will choose to leave the team after the season.
