“How is it possible that this was allowed”- Jamie Carragher Expresses His Frustration For Mikel Arteta And Arsenal
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has criticized Arsenal for letting their city rivals, Tottenham, pass them in recent years.
During an appearance on The Overlap, the 44-year-old discussed the change in the balance of power that has taken place in north London over the last few years.
“Since quite some time ago, and most definitely throughout the course of the last four or five years, Tottenham has been in a stronger position than Arsenal. I am aware that they have not been successful. In my opinion, Arsenal is a far more successful club than Tottenham. As a young child, I was aware of this fact. Nevertheless, over the course of the last four or five years, Tottenham has been a more successful team than Arsenal. How is it possible that this was allowed to occur? ” Carragher said.
Arsenal is a historically more significant club than Tottenham. Arsenal experienced a prolonged spell of dominance that extended over many decades.
The Gunners are finishing below Tottenham in the last few years
The Gunners were constant winners of trophies. They often competed at the highest levels of the Premier League. Arsenal routinely advanced to the later rounds of the European championships.
However, throughout the last few years, there has been a power shift in the capital. It could be said that Tottenham has supplanted their competitors in the city.
For the first time in 22 years, in 2017, the Lily Whites finished higher than the Gunners. Ever since then, they have finished higher than Arsenal every year.
The most recent season of their league play saw them defy the odds and earn a top-four finish. It relegated Mikel Arteta’s team to the UEFA Europa League.
Arsenal needs to restore its position as the dominant team in north London to accurately measure the progress that has been accomplished.
One of the strongest and most historic city rivalries in English football is the North London derby. In recent years, Tottenham has enjoyed predominance. Therefore, for Arsenal to hope for continuous domination at the top of the league, they will first need to reclaim authority back in their home city from Tottenham.
What should Arsenal do now?
Arsenal has not participated in the UEFA Champions League for the last six seasons. The club’s revenues have suffered as a direct result of their absence from the top European tournaments.
Under Mikel Arteta’s direction, there has been some kind of advancement achieved. However, their stunning collapse in the top-four battle this season was disappointingly anticlimactic.
To go back to competing with the top teams on the continent, the club has to reclaim its position as the dominant force in the city. This is the first step to accomplishing this goal. In the foreseeable future, Arsenal will not be able to compete at the same level that Manchester City and Liverpool are now doing. So they are out of reach.
Because of a change in ownership, Chelsea’s near future is rather hazy. But Arsenal can move back into the top four in the league by replacing Tottenham in the standings. This will be the simplest step for Arsenal to do.
