How Lorenzo Casini Can Be A Crucial Figure For Serie A?

An ear-deafening change occurred in Serie A on Friday when Lorenzo Casini became the new president of the league. He is currently serving as a civil servant and head of the cabinet of the Ministry of Culture and will now be in charge of running Serie A as the newly elected president of the top division Italian football league.

His predecessor Paolo Dal Pino stepped down in February this year after becoming frustrated with the environment around the governing body of the league as he was also quoted saying that the current environment was “resistant to change” before he moved to California, USA along with his family.

This is what Lorenzo Casini had to say after being elected president

Casini received 11 votes during this election with heavy support from, Aurelio De Laurentiis, the president of Napoli and Claudio Lotito, the president of Lazio. Amongst other teams, Venice, Genoa, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Udinese, Verona, Spezia Empoli, and Salerno voted for 46-year old Italian.

The opposing group made up of Italian superpowers such as AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus rooted for the former head of Serie B Andrea Adobi but that didn’t result in anything fruitful as Adobi never really got any real support.

Lorenzo Casini previously made his name as an author. He has written various books and articles and also serves on the editorial boards of Rivista trimestrale di diritto pubblico, the Worldwide Journal of Constitutional Legislation and Aedon-Rivista di arti e diritto on line, amongst others. He has previously also served as authorized counsel to the Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism and as an authorized clerk for Justice Professor Sabino Cassese on the Italian Constitutional Courtroom.

Clearly, he is a man with experience from various backgrounds and may help in levelling up the quality of the league. It is yet not clear what Dal Pino meant by his words but Serie A certainly needs a shake-up and a new business model to compete with the other leagues of the top 5 leagues. Not so long ago, Serie A used to be the most-watched football league in the world and a new face with new ideas the helm may prove to become the turning point for the league in the long term.
