Fiorentina In Pole Position To Sign Lucas Torreira From Arsenal

The Midfielder Could Be On His Way To Italy Permanently At The End Of The Season

Fiorentina is in pole position to acquire Lucas Torreira permanently from Arsenal in the summer after the Uruguayan’s successful loan stint with the club this season.

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is expected to clinch a permanent deal with Fiorentina in the summer, according to the Evening Standard. It has been revealed that Arsenal is ready to take a substantial loss on the Uruguayan. They will allow him to depart for a fraction of the money they spent for him back in 2018.

After joining the club from Sampdoria, Lucas Torreira soon established himself as a fan favourite. He is a dependable presence in midfield at the Emirates Stadium. In addition to scoring in the North London Derby and assisting the Gunners in reaching the Europa League final, the Uruguayan has gained even more admiration from the Arsenal fans.

The quality of his play deteriorated in his second season. He fell entirely out of favour until Mikel Arteta joined the team. During his first six months with the club, the Spanish boss only used him on an irregular basis as a substitute to see out games. While on loan from Arsenal, the Uruguayan had a horrendous time at Atletico Madrid.

After his return to the Emirates last year, no teams were willing to pay Arsenal’s asking price for Torreira. But Fiorentina agreed to buy him on a one-year loan deal for the 2021/22 season. The Italian was marking his first appearance in Italy since his departure.

Will the move go through?

The midfielder has rediscovered his form with Fiorentina and has established himself as one of the club’s most valuable players. He has made a significant contribution to the Italians’ push to finish in the top four. That is, even though their progress has been slightly stalled in recent weeks.

In their current deal with Arsenal, Fiorentina has a purchase option of £12.5m that they may exercise. The Gunners did offer the midfielder as part of a deal to sign Dusan Vlahovic in January. But they were unsuccessful in their pursuit of the Serbian when he joined Juventus. However, if the Serie A club chooses to exercise their purchase option on Torreira, there is still a chance for them to get a significant sum from the deal.

If the deal is completed for the aforementioned sum, the Gunners would have suffered a big financial loss on the midfielder. They acquired him for around £25m in 2018. Recent reports have been linking Torreira away from the Emirates. It is reasonable to infer that the Uruguayan has no future at the Emirates.

Torreira’s transfer to Fiorentina would be a fantastic opportunity for him to settle down. He wants to continue rebuilding his career following a difficult period at Arsenal.
