The club was first frozen and all the talks over new contract signings between the players and the board got stalled. It damaged relations and the fans grew frustrated. The team’s on-field performances also took a hit. Eventually, Abramovich was given the green light to sell the club.

The interested bidders started to arrive to take over the club worth a few billion. By a few weeks, the number of bidders was cut down to three and now as things stand, the consortium led by Todd Boehly is set to be named the winner of the rat race.

Boehly is part owner of the American baseball team the Los Angeles Dodgers. The consortium also includes the Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, a close friend of the current owner Abramovich. On Friday, United Kingdom’s richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe submitted a late bid to take over the London based club but reportedly his bid has been rejected by the Raine group.

Boehly is well known as a believer in data and its importance in revolutionizing sports. World football is undoubtedly headed in a direction where a lot of the on and off-field decisions and operations will be data dependent. So, having a visionary at the helm may help Chelsea gain an upper hand in the long term future.

All in all, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has made it publicly clear that he prefers to work under the current setup of Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech and it will be interesting to see where the new owners see those two as the part of their plan.
