After leaving Fiorentina on the last day of the summer transfer deadline in 2016, the Spanish international has been playing for Chelsea for the past six seasons. At Stamford Bridge, he has had his fair share of successes and failures. But on the whole, he has been a steady performer.

However, Alonso’s current deal with the Blues is set to expire after the next campaign. The left-back has made it clear that he wants to leave the club after the current campaign.

Because Barcelona needs a new left-back to offer cover and competition for veteran Jordi Alba, the Catalan club has positioned themselves as the next prospective destination for Alonso.

Previous reports have said that Alonso has already had conditions agreed upon with Barcelona for a transfer in the summer. Despite this, the club has not yet begun the process of negotiating a price with Chelsea.

Barcelona News Transfer: Alonso’s comments on his links to Barcelona

And, in an interview with Onda Cero (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Alonso repeated his wish to move on from the west London club this summer and return to Spain amidst the ties with Barcelona. Alonso’s comments were made because Barcelona has been linked to him.

“As I’ve said before, one of my goals is to go back to Spain. Nevertheless, whether or not that becomes a reality is not just on me. The ambition to compete in Spain at some point in the future is there,” Alonso stated.

Ben Chilwell is Chelsea’s first-choice left-back, while Alonso is now the team’s second-stringer in that position. As long as they can find a suitable successor for the Spanish international, who is now 31 years old, the club may think about selling the player. This is particularly relevant given that the player has made his position very clear.

Alonso, who is an attack-minded full-back with a ton of experience at the highest level, may not turn out to be a solution for the long term. But he could be a convenient fix for a short period until Barcelona can bring in the successor to Alba.
