In their pursuit of summer targets such as Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, and Raphinha, amongst many others, the team has already run across some obstacles.

The significant reduction in the club’s expenditure budget to a negative-sum was imposed by La Liga. It is paired with the club’s previous losses of €700 million as well as the management of staff worth more than €500 million. Both of these factors contributed to the current situation.

Because of the inefficiency of the previous board, which was headed by Josep Maria Bartomeu, the bulk of the costs associated with the workforce are allocated to the wages of the players. Barcelona now has a lot of players in the squad who are overpaid.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona is reportedly formulating a strategy to lower the salaries of the current team.

The club is seeking to take emergency action. One possibility is that they would ask all of the players to accept at least a 50 per cent pay reduction.

Will the Barcelona board be successful in wage reductions?

The only players who would be exempt from this rule would be those who had just signed a new contract with Barcelona or extended an existing one. The likes of Ronald Araujo, Sergi Roberto, and even Gavi might be considered to belong to this group. Additionally, recent acquisitions like Andreas Christensen come into this category as well.

It remains to be seen if the players would agree to such a wage reduction. It is particularly because Barcelona already owes Gerard Pique €50 million in delayed compensation because Pique was paid in instalments.

The selling of players is another potential answer to this problem. Xavi has already told eight Barcelona players that they will leave Camp Nou in the summer. Four more great players, including Frenkie de Jong, might be permitted to depart if Barca receives suitable offers.
