On Wednesday evening, Liverpool utterly outclassed Arsenal in every way. Jurgen Klopp’s team exercised their footballing powers and earned a decisive 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium in what may be a season-defining match.
Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino scored in the second half to give Liverpool a 2-0 win in north London. Thus, reducing Liverpool’s deficit to one point behind league leaders Manchester City.
Liverpool’s performance was one deserving of the Premier League winners. However Arsenal players – Gabriel Martinelli in particular – can still hold their heads high after events at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazilian attacker was electrifying on the left-wing. Trent Alexander-Arnold had a difficult time keeping him under control.
When Martinelli was able to go past the England international several times. It was during a period of play in which he came agonisingly close to providing one of the Premier League’s finest ever assists.
The 20-year-old picked up the ball on the left flank at the opening of the second half. He raced away from both Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz towards the corner flag.
Martinelli then went into ‘beast mode,’ as the expression goes. A beautiful piece of footwork allowed the Arsenal prodigy to slide past Alexander-Arnold near the touchline, leaving Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson following in his wake.
He then placed the ball in an ideal spot for a teammate to score. But Martin Odegaard was unable to get on the end of the pass. So, we were denied what would have been a famous assist.
When Martinelli is in full flow, there is no stopping him. This is why Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp described the teenager as a “talent of the century” during a match between the Reds and Arsenal back in 2019.
After his team’s 2-0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium in the Carabao Cup in January, Martinelli received high appreciation from his equally complimentary boss.
When asked about Martinelli after the game, Klopp said, “Martinelli, by the way, is a name that everyone should know because he’s an exceptional player.”
Following the match on Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp brought up Martinelli once again. But this time he also praised Trent Alexander-performance Arnold’s in the match.
Klopp used strong language to defend his tremendously skilled defensive right-back.
Liverpool will now turn their attention to their FA Cup quarter-final matchup against Nottingham Forest at the weekend. While Martinelli and Arsenal will prepare for their trip to Aston Villa on Saturday. It is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. local time.
Following Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Brighton on Wednesday, the Gunners’ match against Steven Gerrard’s team has become a must-win for them.
